Tomas Venclova, a poet, publicist, translator, literary researcher, and professor at Yale University, was named an honorary member of the association on November 24,2021. His work is a treasure trove of Lithuanian poetry from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and his countless translations into foreign languages attest to his international acclaim.
Tomas Venclova was born on September 11,1937 in Klaipėda. He attended Lithuanian Studies at Vilnius University from 1954 to 1960. He worked at the Institute of History, taught at Vilnius University, and in 1966 founded a semiotics group at Vilnius University. In 1975, he joined the Lithuanian Helsinki Group. In 1977, at the invitation of Česlovas Milošas, he went to teach at the University of Berkeley in the USA, and was deprived of his USSR citizenship for his dissident activities. From 1980 to 2012, he worked at Yale University, where he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1985. Professor Emeritus of Slavic (Russian and Polish) Literature since 2012, he returned to Vilnius in 2019. He has been an Honorary Doctor of Vilnius University, Vytautas Magnus University, Klaipėda University, University of Lublin, University of Krakow, University of Toruń, University of Gdansk, and University of Göttingen. His poems and essays have been translated into English, German, Italian, Swedish, Russian, Polish, Hungarian, Chinese, and other languages.
